Sandy Bowmar

Teenadders was set up in 1995 to work with AD/HD teens and their families within the Rodney District.

Sandy Bowmar, the founder of Teenadders, worked for Specialist Education Services Early Intervention Team and researched the outcome for ADHD children as they progressed through the school system.

Along with their academic underachievement, many had developed negative peers and were often involved with drug and alcohol use.

Home life had also deteriorated and many families were in crisis.
The youth had become volatile with many suffering from severe depression and extreme anger.

For the majority, ADHD had been undetected until the deterioration had meant the involvement of the Adolescent Mental Health Team. Therefore these teens had gone through the school system with no intervention or assistance from any area. The families had no support and were exhausted.

Using the Multi-Modal approach to treatment of AD/HD involving medical, educational, family and individual interventions, the Teenadders program was set up.

Over this period Teenadders has successfully worked with many families seeing the teens return to school successfully, entering the workforce or moving on to tertiary education.

The homelife has stabilised with Family Support Workers offering strategies and support through home visits and the young people have gained a strong sense of worth as they have achieved to their full potential.
